How to Remove Coffee Stains From Carpet

Carpet & rug care

Coffee spills are easiest to handle while they are fresh. The key is to blot, not scrub, and to avoid soaking the carpet.

What you will need

  • Clean white cloths or paper towels
  • Cool water
  • A small bowl
  • A little mild washing-up liquid

1. Blot the spill straight away

Press a clean, dry cloth onto the coffee spill to absorb as much liquid as possible. Work from the outside of the stain toward the centre so it does not spread. Avoid rubbing, which can push coffee deeper into the carpet fibres.

2. Use a mild cleaning solution

Mix a few drops of mild washing-up liquid with cool water. Lightly dampen a clean cloth with the solution—do not pour it directly onto the carpet—and gently blot the stain.

3. Rinse without soaking

Use another cloth dampened with plain cool water to blot away any remaining soap. Then press a dry towel over the area to remove excess moisture.

4. Let it dry fully

Allow the spot to air dry completely before deciding whether more treatment is needed. Once dry, vacuum gently to help the carpet fibres sit normally again.

Spotluma tip

Always test a cleaning solution on a small hidden part of the carpet first—especially with wool, silk, vintage, or strongly coloured rugs.

When to call a professional

Consider professional carpet cleaning if the stain is old, large, mixed with milk or sugar, or keeps returning after the carpet dries. Delicate rugs and natural fibres also deserve specialist care.
