How to Remove Red Wine Stains From Fabric

Stain solutions

Red wine looks dramatic, but quick blotting and gentle treatment can make a real difference. The most important rule is simple: do not rub.

1. Blot the spill immediately

Press a clean white cloth or paper towel onto the stain to lift as much wine as possible. Work from the outer edge inward.

2. Rinse from the reverse side

For washable fabric, hold the stained area under cool running water from the back. This helps push the stain out of the fibres.

3. Apply suitable laundry detergent

Gently apply a small amount of detergent suitable for the fabric, then allow it to sit briefly according to its instructions.

4. Wash and inspect before drying

Wash following the care label. Check that the stain is gone before using a dryer, because heat can set what remains.

Spotluma tip

For silk, wool, upholstery, antique textiles, or dry-clean-only fabric, blot the spill and contact a professional cleaner.
